PROFILE IN COURAGE DINNER

In 2005, Canadian Friends of Ukraine welcomed Myroslava Gongadze at the CFU "Profile in Courage" Dinner held in Toronto, on December 4, 2005

Award-winning Canadian journalist, Christina Pochmursky, delivered introductory remarks to a large audience which included prominent Canadian politicians, journalists, writers, and human rights advocates.

Ms. Gongadze received the Canadian Friends of Ukraine Award in recognition of her efforts to promote a free press and government transparency in Ukraine.

Ms. Gongadze is the widow of the late Georgiy Gongadze, a journalist and founder of the internet newspaper "Ukrayinska Pravda".

Prior to his death, Georgiy Gongadze's work as a journalist was focused on raising awareness about press censorship and corruption among high-ranking government officials in Ukraine.

In September 2000, Gongadze was abducted and brutally murdered under circumstances that indicated state involvement in his death.

Catapulted onto the world stage following her husband's death, Myroslava Gongadze resolved to focus all her efforts on an international media campaign demanding a transparent and lawful investigation of this heinous crime.

In the wake of her husband's murder, Myroslava and her two young children received political asylum in the United States, where Ms. Gongadze continues to work as a journalist in Washington, D.C.
